Multi-Material 3D Printing

Bring your Multi-Material Idea into the spotlight at Formnext 2024

Be Inspired by Multi-Material 3D Printing and Bring Your Ideas to Life.

  • Aim of the Constest.

The contest encourages creative applications of Multi-Material 3D printing to develop innovative, functional components that offer technical, ecological, and economic benefits. The aim is to demonstrate the potential of Multi-Material Jetting technology and advance material science. The best ideas will be selected by a jury.

  • Application Deadline.

    October 9, 2024

  • Who should participate?

Participation is open to engineers and designers from industries such as mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace, medical technology, energy, packaging, and microelectronics. Additionally, start-ups, SME research departments, research institutions, and universities with a focus on 3D-printing and innovative Multi-Materials are eligible to participate.

  • Price.

The winner(s) will have the opportunity to showcase their idea as a printed component to the audience and visitors of the Formnext 2024, the leading trade fair for Additive Manufacturing, held in Frankfurt am Main from November 19 to 22, 2024.

  • Application.

Please submitt a written concept (maximum of two A4 pages), along with supplementary sketches, preferably CAD models, and optionally a simulation of your Multi-Material component.

  • Miscellaneous.

Please review the participation terms carefully. If you have any questions or notice any errors in the competition announcement, do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you and good luck!

Courage and Feasibility.

  • The idea must offer clear added value through the use of Multi-Material 3D-printing and demonstrate innovative application possibilities.

  • The potential of the application (economic and technical) must be demonstrated and an initial feasibility analysis must be included to demonstrate the realisation of the idea. Do you want to combine several or different materials in your component? Then the co-processability of the materials as well as their availability must be given.

  • At least two different materials should be used or a functionality should be integrated into a component that could not be produced with other manufacturing technologies or only at great expense. The component should not only be technically feasible, but also have a well thought-out and functional design.

  • Please adhere to our specifications.

    • Target size: max. 50x50x50mm

    • Wall thickness: between 500µm and 5mm

  • Due to the abundance of different materials in the AM world of Multi-Material 3D-printing, we would like to specify the following materials / material combinations in order to be able to guarantee realisation:

    • Multicoloured ZrO2

    • electrically conductive/electrically insulating Si3N4 ceramic

  • Please consider the sustainability aspect, e.g. resource efficiency or recyclability of materials.

  • The idea should have a clear application reference that addresses a real need.

  • Applications must be submitted in the form of a written concept (max. two A4 pages), supplementary sketches, better CAD models and optionally with a simulation.

Our contest is also subject to a few conditions in order to create a level playing field and, above all, to demonstrate the advantages of Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing. To participate, please check your idea for the following conditions:

We are convinced that an overwhelming number of innovative ideas lie dormant within you and we would like to give you a tool to realise them with our technology for the future. We are also aware of the responsibility that comes with your application and would like to sensitise you to the fact that you must also accept our data protection regulations for this competition in order to participate.

Criteria for the Evaluation

  • Degree of innovation: How novel is the idea?

  • Technical feasibility: Can the idea be realised with the existing MMJ technology of AMAREA Technology?

  • Potential for industry: What impact could the idea have on industry?

  • Interdisciplinary application: Does the idea utilise the possibility of combining different classes of materials or includes a functionality?

A jury will review all the applications received that meet the criteria and, from 10 October, will decide which idea appears to be the most promising. The jury is made up of the management of the Multi-Material 3D printer manufacturer AMAREA Technology and an expert in Additve Manufacturing of Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS. The evaluation will be based on the above criteria and each submission will be judged individually. The best idea will be presented at Formnext 2024.
